U13s Denied at the Death

Proud Run Ends After Final Defeat

13th March 2026

Deal’s hopes of ending their phenomenal Kent Cup run with a victory were ended in heartbreaking fashion on Thursday night.

In front of a packed crowd at the Gallagher Stadium the team battled hard against a competitive Bromley side before eventually falling to an injury time winner.

The game was unfortunately marred by strong, gusting winds and swirling rain that ultimately saw both teams get dragged into playing hopeful long balls to try and clear their lines, leading to a lack of free flowing football that did not make the game overly easy on the eye.

With the wind at their backs in the first half Deal almost scored inside the first minute as Thomas raced on to Smith’s long ball before firing a cross shot that flew just past the far post.

The early stages saw both sides feeling each other out, probing for weaknesses but without creating any clear cut opportunities.

Bromley then fired their first shot in anger as they worked the ball through the midfield and then slid a pass in between Talling & Beeden, allowing the tricky winger the opportunity to fire a shot a few feet over the bar.

The game was 18 minutes old when the deadlock was broken, and it was Deal who made the breakthrough.
Thomas received a throw in down the right hand side before turning and clipping in a cross that was only half cleared.
As the ball rolled towards the edge of the box it sat up perfectly for Ledger and he struck a brilliantly placed effort that flew high into the net off the far post, giving the Bromley goalkeeper no chance.

Buoyed by their lead and looking to utilise their better half of the conditions Deal Town looked to press home their advantage, putting the Bromley back line under pressure but without creating the chance to fire a shot in anger.
Waitt and King saw brief openings closed down by an opposition that were working hard, and the speedy strike pairing of Thomas and Deane were seeing limited service.

Bromley began to settle into the game and started to move the ball with more fluency.
This led to Smith being forced into a lunging challenge to prevent a breakaway that ultimately saw him go into the book, and the resulting set piece saw the ball cleared for a corner from which Bromley looked dangerous and struck an effort just over the bar.

The rest of the half petered out as both sides struggled to keep the ball on the floor and everyone seemed happy to head to the warmth of the dressing room.
Deal in the knowledge that they had the lead and something to work with, and Bromley with the comfort of having the wind at their backs for the second half.

The first 10 minutes of the second half followed a similar pattern, with Bromley probing but Deal not giving an inch.
Bromley began to rotate their squad as they pressed for an equaliser and the fresh legs started to take effect and push Deal back.
Having returned for his first game back from a broken wrist, Johnson in the Deal goal spent the first half as a mere spectator, but he was soon called into action in the second half.

A corner was only headed down and not away and the goalkeeper showed good reflexes to get down quickly and turn the goalbound effort behind with his feet.
The respite was only brief though as the resulting corner was hung up into the wind, and the Bromley attacker rose the highest to glance home a neat header in off the far post.

With the game now in the balance and the momentum firmly with Bromley the boys had to weather the storm both literally and figuratively.

A tactical switch to 4-5-1 with Vranoci replacing Waitt helped to add strength to the Deal defensive line, before the loss of King to injury saw Deal reshuffle the midfield pack again.

The Bromley striker had proven to be a handful all evening, and a sweetly struck left footed half volley following the most free-flowing move of the game was a further warning sign to Deal, who were then relieved to see a long range effort from the Bromley skipper fly just over the bar.

The last remaining minutes were evenly contested, and as the game ticked into injury time and both benches began to prepare for penalties there was still time for late drama.

A wind assisted free kick from the half way line was pumped into the Deal box and time seemed to stand still as it missed everyone and skipped off the surface towards the top corner of the net only for Johnson to somehow reach out a strong hand and claw the ball away at the last second.

The resulting corner was cleared, but Deal were again unable to retain possession, and the ball was worked wide to the left hand side.
Both of the Bromley wingers that had been used on this side and proven to be a handful all evening, and after a clever piece of skill allowed the player to create space he fired in a flat cross that picked up speed as it caught the wind and it arced on the perfect trajectory over the stranded Johnson and nestled in the far corner.

Cue ecstatic scenes from the Bromley players and supporters and a flurry of activity from both benches.
In the melee that followed the fourth official failed to spot that Bromley had 12 men on the field, resulting in the four minutes of injury time being re-added on.

Although this gave Deal a glimmer of hope, they were unable to fashion any kind of shooting opportunity and Bromley cleverly saw the game out to ensure the victory.

An incredibly tough way for the team to lose after a hard fought effort in a game played in terrible conditions, and there was no doubt that having the wind at their backs in the second half once everyone had settled into the game gave Bromley an advantage that they made full use of.

The boys can hold their heads high after a fantastic up run that saw them knock out the teams currently sitting first and second in the strong North division as well as the top two teams in the competitive Central division.

This shows without a doubt that they can compete with the best that the Kent League has to offer, and provides a great springboard and experience for them to learn from as they push for more honours in the years to come.
