Deal Town Football Club captain Kane Smith has announced his retirement from football, bringing to an end a hugely significant spell at the Charles Ground.
The club will recognise Kane’s outstanding service ahead of our home game against Hythe Town on Saturday 1st August, when supporters will have the opportunity to show their appreciation for a player and captain who has played an important role in one of the most successful periods in Deal Town’s recent history.
Born and raised in the Dover area, Kane began his football career with Dover Athletic’s Under-18 side before joining Ramsgate Under-23s in 2015. He quickly progressed into the Ramsgate first team and spent around 18 months at the club before he stepped away from football for a year. His route back into the game came through Deal manager Steve King, who had previously taught Kane at Dover Grammar School.
Knowing that Kane was without a club, Kingy invited him to attend a training session at Deal. Kane accepted the invitation, signed for the Hoops in January 2017 and began an association with the club that would last nearly ten years.
A committed and uncompromising central defender, Kane quickly became known for his determination, bravery and willingness to put his body on the line for the team. He relished one-on-one battles with opposing forwards and always placed the importance of defending and keeping clean sheets above personal recognition.
Kane was appointed Deal Town captain in 2020. He led through his performances, his commitment and the calm influence he provided to those around him.
His captaincy coincided with a period of sustained progress for the club. Deal improved their league position over several seasons, building from a strong foundation and coming increasingly close to promotion before finally becoming champions of the SCEFL.
The defining moment arrived in the 2023/24 season, when Kane lifted the Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division trophy as Deal captain. The championship secured the club’s promotion to Step 4 and represented the culmination of years of hard work from Kane, the management team and a closely knit group of players.
Deal continued that progress during the following campaign, securing the highest league finish in the club’s history and have begun establishing themselves as a step four side.
Kane’s final seasons were disrupted by injuries, including two medial collateral ligament problems. However he has remained closely involved with the squad throughout those periods, offering encouragement and advice to his teammates even when he was unable to contribute on the pitch.
Steve King paid tribute to the contribution Kane has made to the club. Kingy said:
Everyone at the club wishes Kane all the best and knows he won’t be a stranger to us.
He has played a significant role on the pitch during his time at the club but has also led the group brilliantly off the pitch.
It is a tribute to Kane that we were all able to celebrate his recent wedding with him, where the turnout from the squad showed how highly he has been valued not only as a teammate but a great friend.
We wish Kane all the best and thank him for his great service to the club.
Kane leaves behind a lasting legacy at the Charles Ground. He joined a club looking to progress, became its captain and ultimately led Deal Town to a league championship, promotion and a historic first season at Step 4.
